But why a bat?
Bats are a protected species in our vineyards, as they have a positive impact on reducing vine pests. Several winegrowers belonging to Caves de Rauzan collected sound data on bats in 2022. Bats emit ultrasonic sounds for orientation and hunting, which were recorded and analyzed by specialists. This allows to detect the species and quantity of bats present on site. 22 species of bat have been recorded in Gironde. Of these, 20 species have been detected at least once in the Bordeaux vineyards, and 5 species are present in all the vineyard plots, meaning that a wide variety of species can be found in the Bordeaux vineyards. Our internal study showed a strong presence of bats in the vineyards, and the vineyard plots concerned by this strong presence, often close to potential habitats such as roofs, attics, cellars and shutters, were largely less affected by grape worms. Other studies have shown that when cluster worm moths are present, bats increase their hunting activity by a factor of 3. Bats can swallow up to 600 insects a night!
Following this study, we therefore initiated communications with wine growers who are members of Caves de Rauzan in favor of the protection of bats and therefore their habitats.
Léonie therefore seemed to us to be perfect as a new Mascot, bats often lack recognition and sometimes arouse fear but play an essential ecological role.
