Located east of Bordeaux, between the Dordogne and the Garonne, the Entre-Deux-Mers is a green region. Nicknamed “La Petite Toscane”, the region is rich in history and culture and here are some ideas of activities to do if you pass by.

 

The Abbey of La Sauve Majeure

 

You can start your stay by visiting a masterpiece of Romanesque art, the Abbey of La Sauve Majeure. Located in La Sauve, it was before the revolution a stop on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. On a vast site of 3 hectares, the ruins of the monastic buildings and the cloister are next to an abbey church famous for its historiated capitals, which illustrate the sacred texts and the medieval imagination.

Roger Lapébie cycling road

 

Enjoy more than 50 km of cycling road between Latresne and Sauveterre de Guyenne. The Roger Lapébie cycling road is a former railway line with beautiful landscapes and low climbing. Along the trail, many restaurants, picnic areas and guest rooms are available.

 

Célestine Cave

 

And for a speleological escape in Entre-Deux-Mers, discover the undergrounds of the region by visiting the Célestine cave in Rauzan. Equipped like real speleologists, enjoy a 45-minute walk to explore the magnificent natural scenery of the cave.

Enter underground stone quarries with ideal conditions for mushrooms. You can visit and enjoy the animations available on site on Saturdays. You can also buy organic mushrooms on the spot.

Terr’a Safran

 

Also discover Terr’a Safran’s in Nérigean and enjoy a guided tour and a free tasting around saffron. You can visit the fields of saffron all year round but it is recommended to come from October to November to discover the fields in full bloom. You will be able to buy saffron in the local shop on site.

The Cooperative winery of Rauzan

 

And you can’t pass through the region of Entre-Deux-Mers without visiting the Caves de Rauzan! The cooperative groups together nearly 4060 ha of vineyards and 320 winegrowers and is a leader in the Bordeaux region for its involvement in sustainable viticulture. The Caves de Rauzan has one of the most impressive wineries of France with very high winemaking tanks and more than 6000 oak barrels. You can visit in July and August accompanied by a winegrower.

 

The Wine fair of all regions of France

 

Many events also take place in the Entre-Deux-Mers region. For example, once a year in October, the “Ronde des Caves” (Wine fair of all regions of France) takes place. Nine cooperative wineries from all over France come together to make their wines known and appreciated. During this event, discuss with winegrowers to learn more about their skills and commitments. Visits of the Caves de Rauzan winery are also offered to visitors during the event.

 

Gourmet trail

 

Another unmissable event in the Entre-Deux-Mers to appreciate the gastronomy and the festive atmosphere of the region is the Récréation Gourmande (Gourmet Trail) . On the second Sunday of June each year enjoy a 6 km walk in the heart of the vineyards. 7 gourmet and musical stages which 120 volunteer winegrowers will make you taste their wines in a festive and authentic way. Whether you are a novice or an amateur, put on your sneakers and come and try the experience!
